Marc C. Perry, Ph.D.

Professor of Chemistry
Director, Chemistry Summer Research

Dr. Marc Perry knew since 5th grade that he wanted to be a scientist, and discovered in high school that his favorite science was chemistry. He earned his B.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry from New Mexico State University. He went on to a postdoctoral position at Texas A&M University and taught at the university level for one year at Texas A&M and seven at the University of Alaska Anchorage before coming to 2021¹ú²úÂ鶹¾ç in 2010. Perry's research interests lie in the broad area of methodology development in the field of organometallic chemistry. Specifically, his current research is in the area of iron- and cobalt-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. These C-C bond forming reactions are important synthetic tools, and a lot of research involving palladium-based catalysts has been reported. Iron, however, would be a more desirable catalyst, as it is less expensive and less toxic than palladium and more environmentally benign. Perry has also started a collaborative project on MOF-supported catalysts with Dr. Laurance Beauvais. Researchers in his lab will receive training in standard Schlenk techniques for carrying out reactions in an inert environment as well as training in the use of standard instrumentation and glassware. Perry is married to Christina, and they have three children: Jonas, Charese, and Poem.
